City of Tujunga Profile
A bit if trivia about Tujunga:
Pictured below depicts the “clean air” and beautiful backdrop of picturesque views for many residential homes in the hills of Tujunga. It’s a rural setting, meaning most streets originating in the 1940’s and 50’s, are without traditional sidewalks and street lights (although many neighborhoods now boast of these amenities). Some more recent neighborhoods are supplied by underground utilities providing unobstructed views. Beautiful tree-lined streets and hilly terrain is found meandering throughout Tujunga.
Foothill Boulevard is the main thoroughfare serving as the community’s hub of commercial businesses, auto repair shops, “mom & pop” specialty stores including many ethnic restaurants.
Tujunga’s suburban development began in the 1950’s with the construction of many modestly sized, affordable single-family detached residences. The average price of homes in the 50's was $5,000 to $10,000. Just imagine!
Tujunga sits at about 1,500 feet elevation which sets it apart from sister communities of San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles Basin which frees it on most days from the bad air pollution. Because of this it has attracted many asthmatics early in it’s history. “Cornet Magazine” once called Tujunga “the most healthy place in the world.”
Some of the scenes from the film E.T. were shot in the Seven Hills area of Tujunga, making particularly effective, the movie’s focus on a suburban residential lifestyle in contrast to mountain scenery.
Tujunga is known for its abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. A number of equestrian trails wind along the foothills of the San Gabriels and the Verdugo Mountains and hiking and mountain biking in La Tuna Canyon, Big Tujunga and Little Tujunga canyons is quite popular.
